Dealing with ‘Range anxiety’ : Wireless Roads to Charge Electric Vehicles

“Range anxiety” is the term given to drivers of electric cars that are struck by the sudden fear that their vehicle does not have enough charge to reach its destination.

To give a solution for “Range anxiety” Electreon Wireless Ltd. is pressing ahead with projects to test its technology that allows electric cars to be charged while driving with efficiency of 90%, potentially demonstrating a way to overcome a key barrier to the mass adoption of the vehicles.

How Is It Done ?

The technology includes a Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer system, coils placed under the road at the center of the traffic lane, a receiver located under the vehicle chassis and a communication system to provide real-time communication with each vehicle. The power station includes an underground system that transmits the energy to the road’s infrastructure.

An alternating current (AC) flows through a wire coil (the transmitter), which causes a magnetic field to switch between two directions at a high frequency. A second coil (the receiver) exposed to that magnetic field picks up those oscillations, inducing an AC current in its own circuit, which is then used to power the car."

A self-charging roadway would allow EV makers to use smaller, lighter batteries. They would get replenished as you drive. Smaller batteries that still provide adequate range would reduce the purchase price of battery-powered vehicles. Electreon wants to start with urban bus and shuttle routes first. After installing that first mile of electrified road in Tel Aviv, the company wants to expand deployment to a long route around the city. The company’s big vision is for all-electric city transport across the entire globe.
